An additional Amazonian superfruit, camu camu, also referred to as cacari and camocamo, is the fruit of a small, bushy riverside tree native to the Amazon rainforest in Peru and Brazil. This tree bears a fruit that resembles a cherry but is reddish-purple in color. The petals of its tiny flowers are snowy white and waxy, and they emit a pleasant scent.

It is difficult to find documentation of the traditional uses of camu camu. Camu camu has a unique aroma and fruit pigmentation. The attractive and distinctive pink color of the juices that are extracted from the leathery skin is caused by a pigment that is reddish in appearance and is found in the skin. The aroma is delicate, but it is not nearly as captivating as the aroma of other, more well-known fruits.

The amount of vitamin C that can be found in camu camu is astoundingly high. It outranks all other fruits in terms of the amount of vitamin C it contains. The amount of vitamin C in an organism drops as it reaches its full maturity, and there is a direct correlation between the amount of vitamin C and the level of flavor expression. Camu Camu also contains a few amino acids and flavonoids.

Because of the fruit’s extremely high level of acidity, its flavor can only be fully appreciated when it is processed in a blender, diluted in milk or water, and sweetened. Recipes requiring these three additional steps are required. Ice cream and drinks made with camu camu have only recently become popular.

Powder that has been processed from the fruit pulp is starting to be sold as a health food. The powder can either be sold loose or in capsule form. It is a wonderful ingredient to put in smoothies.

Camu Berry Lemonade

Ingredients:
2 Tbsp. Camu Camu Powder
1/2 Tbsp. Agave Syrup
1/3 cup fresh squeezed lemon juice
2 Tbsp agave nectar
1 quart water

Directions:
1. In a blender, combine all ingredients and briefly blend.
2. Add additional sweetener, if desired, to taste.
3. Chill before serving.

Vitamin C Boost Smoothie

Ingredients:
2 tsp. Camu Camu Powder
3 cups freshly squeezed orange juice
1 cup frozen mango
1/2 cup strawberries
1/4 cup Goji Berries, soaked
1 scoop vanilla protein powder
2 tsp. Chia Seeds
1 Tbsp. flax oil

Directions:
1. Soak goji berries in 1/2 cup of water for 20 mins to help soften them.
2. Combine all ingredients, including goji berry soaking water and blend until smooth.
